Facebook News

Facebook is unveiling new options for its website.

First, they are starting the “Virtual Gifts” option. For a fee you can send someone a gift. Really this is just a cute picture/icon that will be displayed on their “gift shop” which will be similar to a wall. I don’t really see the value in it, but I can see it as a status symbol of how much you are liked to have a lot of gifts on your facebook profile.

Second, they are teaming up with  jobster.com to provide a better professional networking element to the website to keep recently graduating college students from abandoning the site.

Both of these additions are aimed at creating more revenue for the website, which I imagine isn’t making too much profit off of those small banner ads on the left side of the web page. The problem with Jobster is that I know I don’t want potential employers seeing all of my facebook pics, and the feeling on this is well documented on the internet. Remember when the facebook news feed was unveiled? I just don’t see much movement on either of these.
