Can a polo player represent more than Polo the brand?

Ralph Lauren Polo is suing an upstart polo (the sport) inspired clothing company because of trademark infringement.

Ralph Lauren is pretty good at defending their brand, according to MSNBC:

Ralph Lauren, meanwhile, has fought numerous trademark battles over its “polo” rights – including a contest with the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, over polo player images on perfume and soap. That tussle went to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg and ended in victory for the fashion brand.
