Why McCain being labled a Liberal

McCain is still getting blasted by those on the right wing of the Republican party. If you take this on its surface value, it would seemingly be justified because he has made some moves to work with his colleagues on the other side of the aisle on occasion.

However, I think there is a subtler more strategic reason McCain is being painted as so different from real republicans.

Democrats now, while emphasizing their current agenda and message, still emphasize that it is time to get away from Bush and the past 7 years. I heard this in both Obama’s and Clinton’s speeches last night. I heard from DNC reps. The key to winning is to get in people’s minds that a Democratic win is a change from the current Republican system.

Conservatives are painting McCain as a crazy rebel, because that is the only way to secure a Republican win. They need to distance McCain as much from the past 7 years as possible. So, saying he is not a true republican, allows for the same party, with the same goals, to win.
