Women Lawyers have High Divorce Rates
In my continued assault to my colleagues of the fairer sex (joke!), I ran across an article that notes marriage is hard for female lawyers.
A researcher has found that young female lawyers and other women professionals have slightly higher divorce rates than their male counterparts.
This doesn’t surprise me at all. The job requires a lot of long hours, and a level of dedication that almost requires you to sacrifice your personal lives.
Because of the way our society still treats the genders, men can get away with this by finding a girl who wants to be a stay at home wife and take care of the kids, or doesn’t mind you not being around much.
Men however, largely still have trouble being considered house husbands. There is still a big stigma attached to guys who are not the heads of their households. Add to that that many women are attracted to power in the opposite sex, and men who are in positions of equal or more power than an attorney are also probably going to be very dedicated to their jobs, and unlikely to have time at home to spend on the relationship. So women attorneys have it rough.
The advice that ends the article should not come as a surprise then:
Hewlett has this advice for well-educated, high-earning women: Look for a husband who is particularly loving and supportive.
