New Virginia Driver’s Licenses

VA is updating the look of it’s licenses. Strangely, after reading about and seeing the new version, I can’t help but think they are a step backwards.

• Black and White photos – really? Is color ink THAT expensive? Is the recession that bad?

For some reason, I can’t help but think this will actually make the cards easier to fake for underage kids looking to buy booze. The face will be that much harder to match up if B&W. Just grab your older brother/sisters’ card.

Also, the description of the new card calls them “secure cards”. I wonder if they are going to have RFIDs like the new passports. I hate this system. It is a chip implated in the card/paper that transmits your information for easy scanning. Kind of like a UPC code, but through radio waves, like bluetooth. Supposedly it is encrypted- but the paranoid nerd in me knows that won’t last long.
