Discourse Debate

Rep. Wilson has apologized for his outburst tonight.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the president’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill,” Wilson said. “While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable.  I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”

I can fully appreciate and accept this apology. I have no problem with disagreement, I have a problem with the method. That was not the forum.

That was my problem with the outburst the entire time. Ever since the 08 election season, we have seen political discourse go further and further into the mud. Whether it is from “birthers”, or crazy town hall scream fests that end in people losing fingers, or even some of the harsher parodies on SNL. We have seen the public go into darker and less respectable areas when it comes to discussing politics. Now, it has started to bleed into our legislative bodies.

How far are we from the time of Charles Sumner? Will there have to be a fistfight in the house before we wake up? Our leaders need to start acting like leaders. Only young, immature democracies should act like this:

If we want to encourage democracies around the world, we should act like role models, not the contestants on Real Chance at Love 2.

  1. What should really bother you is the fact that he’s just flat out wrong, and no reasonable and informed person could come to the conclusion that the relevant statement from Obama can be fairly characterized as a lie. There are many non partisan fact checking organizations out there, and they all come to the same conclusion.

Either Joe’s an idiot or he’s a knowing liar. Either way, our biggest concern should be that we have someone like this in Congress.
